The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Toby found the old zombie puppet in his attic. It had green stitching for hair and button eyes that seemed to sparkle in the sunlight. Most kids thought zombies were scary, but Toby named him Zed and carried him everywhere.
One afternoon, Toby headed to the meadow with his favorite baseball bat. He practiced swinging, even though he had no one to play with. Suddenly, a clever red fox darted from the bushes, watching him with bright amber eyes.
"Want to play?" Toby asked, tossing the baseball gently. The fox caught it in his paws and tossed it back with surprising skill. Toby laughed. "You're my new friend!"
They played until the sun began to set. That's when they heard heavy snorting from the nearby farm. A massive bull with golden fur wandered into the meadow. Toby trembled, but the bull only lowered his head and nudged the baseball with his nose.
"He wants to play too!" Toby realized.
The fox, the bull, and Toby formed the most unusual baseball team ever. The fox was their speedy outfielder. The bull hit home runs that soared into the clouds. And Zed? Zed sat in the dugout, cheering them on with his stitched smile.
As the full moon rose, something magical happened. Zed's button eyes glowed. His wooden arms waved. The zombie puppet came to life!
"Magic," Zed croaked in a rusty voice. "Friendship magic."
Zed joined their game, running clumsily but with so much joy that Toby's heart felt full. The four of them played baseball under moonlight until the stars twinkled above.
Toby learned that day that scary things aren't always scary. That friends come in all shapes—foxes, bulls, even zombie puppets. And that the best magic is the magic of friendship and play.
Now every full moon, if you listen carefully near the old meadow, you might still hear them playing—the joy of friendship making even the most unusual friends come alive.
