The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Ten-year-old Mia loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, she played in the park with her friends. But this Saturday was different—the sky turned dark gray, and distant rumbled.
"We should go home," said her friend Leo, grabbing his bat.
"Just one more pitch!" Mia begged.
As she wound up to throw, a bolt of lightning flashed—and something tumbled out of the sky. It landed with a soft thud near home plate.
The children gasped. It was green and slightly crumbly, with messy hair and one sock missing. It looked like… a zombie! But this zombie wore a dusty baseball cap and smiled shyly.
"Hi," said the zombie. "I'm Zed. I fell through a magic cloud. Is this… baseball?"
The kids stepped back nervously.
"Please," Zed said, holding up a crumbly hand. "I've watched baseball from the clouds forever. I just want to play."
Mia's heart melted. "Okay, Zed. You can be on my team."
Zed's eyes lit up. He was surprisingly good! When he hit the ball, it flew past the trees. When he ran, leaves danced behind him. The sky seemed to brighten with his joy.
But then Zed looked sad. "I have to go back soon. Magic clouds don't stay open long."
"Wait!" Mia had an idea. She handed him her favorite baseball. "So you'll never forget us."
Zed hugged the ball tight. "Thank you. Sometimes things seem scary at first, but friendship is the real magic."
Another lightning flashed—sparkly and gold this time. Zed floated upward, waving happily, the baseball tucked safely in his pocket.
"Visit us!" the children called.
And sometimes, on stormy Saturdays, Mia swears she sees a green figure in the clouds, practicing his swing.
The other kids never forgot what Mia taught them: don't judge someone by how they look. The scariest-looking person might just be the friend you never knew you needed.
