The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his favorite bat—the one with chipped blue paint—and practice in his backyard. But today, the ball sailed over the fence and disappeared into the creepy, tangled garden behind old Mrs. Greenbrier's house.

Leo tiptoed through the bushes and found something strange. A thick black cable snaked through the grass, glowing with tiny twinkling lights. Following it, he discovered a small robot made of garden tools, lying motionless on a patch of vibrant spinach.

"Are you... a zombie?" Leo whispered, remembering his older sister's scary stories.

The robot's eyes flashed pink. "I am Zom-Bee," it beeped. "I was built to play baseball, but my batteries ran out. The spinach here is magic—it's growing around my power cells!"

Leo's eyes widened. "You love baseball too?"

"More than anything!" Zom-Bee cheered. "But I can't move until the spinach fully recharges me. That will take three days."

Leo looked at the sad little robot. "I'll help!" he declared.

Every day after school, Leo visited Zom-Bee. He read baseball books aloud, shared his lunch, and even watered the magic spinach. They talked about home runs, perfect pitches, and the joy of playing under the sun.

On the third day, Zom-Bee's eyes blazed bright green. "I'm charged! Thank you, Leo!"

The robot stood up and reached for the cable, plugging it into a small solar panel. "This cable lets me share my power with friends."

That afternoon, Leo and Zom-Bee played the most wonderful game of catch. The robot could predict exactly where the ball would go! But when other kids gathered to watch, Zom-Bee froze.

"They'll be scared of me," it worried.

Leo shook his head. "They'll see how amazing you are."

He was right. Soon, the whole neighborhood joined their baseball games. Zom-Bee taught them new techniques, and they taught the robot about friendship and laughter.

Leo learned that sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the best friends—you just have to be brave enough to say hello first.

And every evening, Zom-Bee would plug into the magic spinach patch, recharging for another day of adventure.
