The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Leo sat by the edge of the sparkling water, his favorite baseball glove resting on his lap. The pond had always been magical – sometimes, if you looked closely, you could see another world shimmering beneath the surface.
That's when he saw him. A green figure peeked out from behind the weeping willow. A zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary like in the movies. He wore a faded baseball cap and held a dusty ball.
"Want to play?" the zombie asked, his voice sounding like autumn leaves crunching.
Leo's eyes widened. "You like baseball?"
"Used to play every day," the zombie said sadly. "Before... well, before." He tossed the ball. Leo caught it perfectly.
Suddenly, the air sparkled. From the middle of the pond rose a magnificent sphinx, her wings glistening like morning dew. She floated toward them, her wise eyes twinkling.
"I am the Guardian of the Pond," she announced. "Each sunset, I grant one wish to those who show true friendship."
The zombie looked at his feet. "I wish... I wish I could play baseball again. But look at me – I'm falling apart."
Leo noticed the zombie's loose button and slightly crooked arm. But he also noticed the zombie's kind eyes and perfect pitch.
"You're not falling apart," Leo said firmly. "You're perfectly you. And you throw better than anyone I know."
The sphinx smiled, and her wings cast golden light over them. "That," she said, "is the magic of friendship. Seeing not what's missing, but what's wonderful."
She waved her paw, and suddenly the zombie stood straighter, his button secure, his arm strong. But the real magic wasn't in fixing him – it was in the smile on his face.
"Play ball!" the zombie cheered.
They played until sunset, Leo and his new friend, while the sphinx watched from her magical perch above the water. And every day after, Leo learned something important: the best friends aren't the ones who look perfect. They're the ones who play with their whole heart, no matter what.
Sometimes the most wonderful discoveries come from the most unexpected places – even from a zombie who just wants to play baseball.
