The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Lily was the best spy in all of Maple Street. Or at least, that's what she told herself every morning when she grabbed her binoculars and notebook. Her mission? Discover the truth about the mysterious house at the end of the block.
Old Mr. Abernathy's house had a fence covered in vines and a towering palm tree that swayed in the breeze like it was dancing to secret music. Every afternoon, Lily would crouch behind the big oak tree and watch. And every afternoon, she saw something impossible.
A zombie.
Well, that's what she thought at first. A shuffling figure in tattered clothes would limp out of the house, groaning softly. But something didn't make sense. Zombies were scary, right? So why did this one carry a baseball glove?
One day, Lily's cat Mittens darted toward the mysterious fence, tail puffed up like a bottlebrush. "Mittens, come back!" Lily whispered, chasing after her. She squeezed through a gap in the vines and tumbled into the most magical sight she had ever seen.
The zombie wasn't a zombie at all. It was Mr. Abernathy, wearing an old costume for his community theater group! And in his palm, he held a baseball, tossing it gently to… Mittens?
"I see you've met my secret assistant," Mr. Abernathy smiled, his eyes crinkling kindly. Mittens purred, rubbing against his leg. "We've been practicing for the neighborhood baseball game. I used to be a pitcher, you know."
Lily's jaw dropped. "But… why the costume?"
"Children used to be afraid of this old house," Mr. Abernathy said softly. "I thought if I looked silly, they might laugh instead of fear. And then they might come say hello."
Something warm bloomed in Lily's chest. "I was scared too," she admitted. "I was spying on you because I wanted to be brave. But you were being brave all along."
"Want to join our practice?" Mr. Abernathy held out the baseball. "I think we could use another player."
Lily grinned, taking the ball. It felt perfect in her hand, like magic. "I'd love that."
That afternoon, under the swaying palm tree, a spy, a former actor, and a very smart cat played the most wonderful game of baseball ever. And Lily learned that sometimes the scariest stories are just waiting for someone brave enough to discover the truth hiding underneath.
