The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Ten-year-old Maya loved summer evenings, especially when her friends gathered at the park. Tonight was special—it was the annual neighborhood baseball game, and Maya's team was losing badly.

"We need a miracle!" shouted her best friend Toby, wiping sweat from his forehead. The sun was setting, and everyone was tired from running bases all afternoon.

That's when they saw him—a lanky figure stumbling near the old oak tree. His clothes were tattered, his face was painted green, and he moved with a funny, jerky walk.

"It's a zombie!" screamed little Lily, hiding behind Maya's legs.

But Maya noticed something. The zombie was carrying a baseball glove, and his eyes weren't scary at all—they were kind and twinkling with mischief.

"Are you... here to eat our brains?" Maya asked bravely.

The zombie shook his head and held up his glove. Then, in a raspy but friendly voice, he said, "Actually, I was wondering if I could play? I've been watching you all from behind the tree, and my arms are itching to swing a bat."

It turned out the "zombie" was Mr. Henderson, the retired gym teacher who lived two streets over. He was practicing his Halloween costume but couldn't resist joining their game when he saw how much fun they were having.

Mr. Henderson hit the ball so far it landed in the pond with a splash! The team cheered and rushed to get it, but the water was too deep to reach.

"I've got an idea!" Maya grabbed some long branches from the ground. Together, they fished out the baseball, working as a team.

"That's what I call teamwork," Mr. Henderson said with a wink. "Sometimes the scariest-looking situations turn out to be the most fun."

That night, Maya learned an important lesson: things aren't always what they seem, and sometimes the best surprises come from the most unexpected places. And the zombie? He became their team's official batting coach, Halloween costume and all!
