The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Lily discovered the sparkly purple hat in her grandmother's attic. It smelled like cinnamon and old stories. When she placed it on her head, something magical happened—her pet goldfish, Finny, started talking!

"That hat belonged to the Starlight Queen," Finny bubbled, swimming excitedly in circles. "It can show you the true heart of anyone."

Lily peered through her bedroom window and gasped. Every afternoon, a slow-moving figure shuffled past her house. The neighborhood kids called him the zombie, but they only whispered it.

"Let's see his true heart," Lily said, clutching the hat.

Outside, she approached the mysterious figure. He wore tattered clothes and moved stiffly, like his joints were rusty hinges. But through the hat's magic, Lily saw something glowing in his pocket—a faded old baseball card.

"I... I used to play," the man said, his voice crackling like autumn leaves. His name was Mr. Higgins, and he wasn't a zombie at all. He was just lonely and sad, missing his wife who had loved baseball more than anything.

Lily's eyes lit up. She grabbed her baseball glove from her backpack. "My friends and I play every Saturday at the park. Would you... do you want to join us?"

Mr. Higgins's cloudy eyes suddenly sparkled like stars. For the first time in years, his stiff movements transformed into an eager trot. The zombie wasn't a zombie anymore. He was Mr. Higgins, baseball coach and friend.

Every Saturday after that, the neighborhood gathered for the most wonderful baseball games. Mr. Higgins taught them how to hit, how to catch, and most importantly, how to never judge someone by how they walked or what they wore.

Finny the goldfish would sometimes watch from his bowl, bubbling with happiness. The magical sparkly hat had done more than show a true heart—it had created a whole team of them.
