The Zombie Who Lost His Smile

Lily was the kind of girl who talked to animals. Not in a weird way—she just knew they had important things to say. One rainy afternoon, while watching her pet goldfish, Captain Fin, swim circles in his bowl, she heard a tiny tap at the window.

It was Zomb, the friendliest zombie in the neighborhood. His green skin was wrinkled like a pickle, and one of his eyes hung loose, wobbling when he walked. But Zomb wasn't scary. He was just... lonely.

"Nobody wants to play with me," Zomb grunted, his voice sounding like rocks tumbling in a dryer. "They all run away."

Lily's mom had given her her old iPhone, which Lily mostly used to take pictures of bugs. Suddenly, she had an idea.

"Zomb, what if we show everyone how wonderful you really are?"

Lily started taking photos of Zomb doing kind things. Zomb helping a squirrel find a nut. Zomb carefully replanting a fallen flower. Zomb reading stories to the neighborhood cats. Captain Fin even swam to the front of his bowl and smiled (well, as much as a goldfish can) whenever Zomb visited.

The best picture was the one where Zomb held Captain Fin's bowl gently so the fish could watch the birds outside. Zomb's droopy eye didn't matter anymore. What showed was his huge, caring heart.

Lily posted the photos on the neighborhood app. That evening, children knocked on Zomb's door—not to run away, but to ask if he wanted to play tag. The zombie who'd lost his smile had found something better: friends who saw him for who he really was.

And Captain Fin? He swam extra-fast that night, proud of the part he'd played in helping a friend find where he belonged.

Sometimes the best friends come in the most surprising packages.
