The Zombie Who Lost His Smile

Lily's golden dog, Barnaby, was the best detective in the neighborhood. His nose could find anything—lost balls, hidden treats, and even adventure.

One sunny afternoon, Barnaby began digging furiously under the old oak tree. His tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled. Out popped not a bone, but something strange: a small green figure with stitches, one button eye, and the grumpiest face Lily had ever seen.

"Is that... a zombie?" Lily gasped, picking up the little doll. "But he's not scary—he's just lonely."

The toy zombie blinked his single button eye. "I'm Zombo," he squeaked. "A child forgot me here years ago. Nobody wants a zombie doll."

Suddenly, leaves rustled above. A fuzzy brown bear peeked down from the tree branch.

"I'm Bruno!" the bear called, climbing down carefully. "I heard someone needed a friend."

Bruno was a gentle giant who loved honey and helping others. He examined Zombo with kind eyes. "You're not scary—you're wonderful! Look at your fine stitching and brave heart."

Lily had an idea. "Let's take Zombo to the playground! He needs to meet new friends."

So Barnaby, Bruno the bear, Lily, and the little zombie set off together. Along the way, children stopped to stare, but Lily introduced Zombo proudly. "This is my friend. He's different, but that's what makes him special."

By the time they reached the swings, other children gathered. Zombo told funny stories about his years underground, and Barnaby made everyone laugh with his silly tricks. Bruno gave the best pushes on the swings.

"I never thought I'd have friends," Zombo whispered, his painted smile seeming to grow. "I thought being different meant being alone."

Lily hugged her zombie doll tight. "Different is exactly right. The best friends are the ones you least expect."

That evening, Zombo slept on Lily's pillow, Barnaby at her feet, and somewhere nearby, Bruno waved from the woods. Sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone to look past their outside and see the heart within.

And somewhere, deep in the magical forest, other forgotten toys were waiting for their own adventure to begin.
