The Zombie Who Lost His Cable

Lily was running through the park, her favorite purple sneakers slapping the pavement. She loved the feeling of wind in her hair and the world blurring past her. Today was special — her mom had given her an old iPhone to play games on, and she couldn't wait to show her best friend Marcus.

"Marcus! Look!" Lily waved the phone as she skidded to a stop near the playground. Marcus was sitting on the swings, his head ducked low.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked, rushing over.

"My tablet won't turn on," Marcus mumbled. "I think it's broken."

Lily sat beside him. "Maybe it just needs charging? Do you have your cable?"

Marcus shook his head. "I lost it. My mom says I can't get another one until my birthday."

Lily twisted her iPhone around in her hands. That's when she noticed something strange — a tiny green hand was waving at her from inside the screen! She rubbed her eyes, but it was still there. A little zombie with stitching across his forehead and the friendliest smile she'd ever seen.

"Hi!" the zombie squeaked. "I'm Zed! I'm stuck in here! Can you help me?"

Lily gasped. "Marcus, look!"

Marcus leaned in, his eyes going wide. "Is that... a zombie?"

"Yes, but he's nice!" Lily said quickly. "Zed, how do we get you out?"

"My magical cable!" Zed cried. "The one that charges imagination! Without it, I'm trapped in phone land forever!"

Lily and Marcus looked at each other. They both knew exactly where imagination lived — in the big oak tree at the corner of the park, where they'd buried their treasure box last summer.

"Come on!" Lily shouted, already running toward the tree. "We have to dig up the treasure box!"

They dug frantically, their fingers covered in dirt. And there, wrapped in shiny foil, was an old charging cable they'd forgotten about years ago. Lily plugged it into her iPhone, and suddenly — POP!

Zed tumbled out, no bigger than a teddy bear, with green skin and bright orange hair. He hugged them both. "Thank you! Now I can play with you forever!"

And that's how Lily and Marcus learned that sometimes, the best friends are the ones you find in the most unexpected places — and that imagination is the most powerful cable of all.
