The Zombie Who Learned to Splash
Lily and Max were playing by the old mill stream when they saw him—a lanky green figure shuffling near the willow trees. He looked like a zombie from storybooks, but his eyes were kind and curious.
"Hello?" Lily called softly.
The zombie stopped. He pointed at the flowing water and shook his head vigorously.
"Oh!" Max realized. "Are you afraid of water?"
The zombie nodded sadly.
That's when their adventure began. Lily and Max decided to help their new friend, who they named Zippy, overcome his fear. First, they showed him how fun water could be. They skipped stones across the surface. They made tiny paper boats and raced them downstream. They blew bubbles through hollow reeds.
Zippy watched, fascinated but still nervous.
"Watch this!" Max shouted, running through the shallow grass near the stream's edge. Water sprayed up around his feet, making sparkling rainbows in the sunlight.
Zippy's eyes widened. He took one step toward the water, then two.
"You can do it!" Lily cheered.
Running became their game. They ran back and forth along the stream, jumping over tiny puddles, splashing in the shallows. Zippy started running too—stiffly at first, then with more confidence. Water droplets flew everywhere like tiny diamonds!
Soon Zippy was laughing. He discovered the water wasn't scary at all. It was magical! It could sparkle and dance. It could cool you on hot days. It could make the most beautiful sounds.
That afternoon, Zippy didn't just learn to touch the water. He learned to splash, to wade, and even to doggy-paddle! The zombie who had been afraid of water became the best swimmer in the whole magical forest.
And every summer day after that, if you looked carefully by the old mill stream, you might see three friends running and playing together—two human children and one very happy, very wet green zombie.
Lily and Max learned something too: sometimes the things we're afraid of are just waiting to become our favorite adventures.
