The Zombie Who Learned to Play

Lily loved the old cable that swung across the sparkling creek behind her house. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab it and swing—WHOOSH—right over the rushing water, landing softly in the soft grass on the other side. It was her favorite spot in the whole world.

One sunny afternoon, Lily was practicing her baseball swing when she heard a rustle in the bushes. Out stumbled a greenish, bumpy figure with messy hair and clothes that looked like they'd been slept in for a hundred years.

"Are you... a zombie?" Lily asked, clutching her baseball bat tight.

The creature nodded sadly. "I'm Zombert. Everyone runs away from me. But I don't want to be scary. I just want to play."

Lily looked at Zombert's sad eyes. They weren't scary at all—they were kind and lonely. "Do you like baseball?"

"I've never played," Zombert said, perking up. "Is it fun?"

"It's the BEST!" Lily handed him a glove. "Let me teach you!"

They spent the afternoon running bases, throwing balls, and laughing. Zombert wasn't scary when he was having fun—he was just a kid who wanted friends. The magical water in the creek seemed to sparkle extra bright, as if it were smiling too.

When other kids came by, they started to run away. But then they saw Zombert hit a home run and do a silly happy dance.

"Wait!" called Maya. "Can we play too?"

Soon, everyone was playing baseball together. Zombert wasn't the zombie anymore. He was just Zombert, their friend who loved baseball almost as much as he loved making people laugh.

That night, Lily swung across the cable one last time. She learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things just need someone to give them a chance. And the best friends come when you're brave enough to say 'hello' first.
