The Zombie Who Learned to Fly

Leo loved collecting things that other people threw away. Old buttons, shiny stones, and especially the mysterious black cable he found tangled in the oak tree. It sparkled with tiny stars when he held it up to the sun.

"What are you?" Leo whispered, winding the glowing cable around his wrist like a bracelet.

Suddenly, a rustling sound came from behind the bushes. Out stumbled not a monster, but a small, gray creature with sad eyes and stiff, jerky movements. A zombie! But instead of being scary, this zombie looked lonely and lost.

"Hello," said Leo bravely. "Are you okay?"

The zombie nodded slowly, then pointed at Leo's wrist. The magical cable was humming now, pulsing with warm golden light. It reached toward the creature like it wanted to help.

"Oh!" Leo gasped as he understood. He gently unwound the cable and reached out. The zombie took it, and instantly began to change. The gray color faded, replaced by shimmering rainbow scales. The stiff movements became graceful. This wasn't a zombie at all — it was a Moon Dragon, stuck in a magical sleep!

"Thank you," the dragon spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I was stuck in that form for one hundred years."

The dragon's name was Starlight, and she had been the guardian of children's dreams. But she'd fallen asleep and forgotten who she was.

"Let's play!" Leo suggested, grabbing his favorite baseball. "I'll teach you running!"

Starlight wasn't very good at running at first. She tripped over her own tail and tumbled into flowers. But Leo didn't laugh. He helped her up and showed her how to move her wings to glide instead of run. Soon Starlight was zooming through the sky, catching the baseball in her claws and tossing it back with rainbow sparkles.

"Being different doesn't mean you're scary," Starlight said, landing beside Leo. "It just means you're waiting for the right friend to help you shine."

That night, Leo fell asleep with the magical cable around his wrist, dreaming of flying with his new best friend. Some things that seem scary at first are just wonderful things waiting to be understood.
