The Zombie Who Learned to Float
Penny was not like other zombies. While her friends shambled around the graveyard at night moaning for brains, Penny loved something completely different. She loved water.
Every full moon, when the other zombies were busy being spooky, Penny would sneak down to the sparkling creek that wound through the edge of the old cemetery. The water shimmered like liquid silver under the moonlight, calling to her in a way nothing else did.
One summer night, as Penny sat dangling her greenish feet in the cool creek, she heard a tiny splash. A fluffy orange cat with the brightest green eyes she'd ever seen emerged from behind a willow tree. The cat wasn't scared of her at all.
"You're doing it wrong," the cat said matter-of-factly.
Penny gasped. "You can talk?"
"I'm Mr. Whiskers, and yes, I can talk. And you're supposed to be swimming, not just sitting there." The cat flicked his tail. "Zombies don't usually like water, but you're different. I can see it in your eyes."
Penny's heart (which still beat, very slowly) swelled with hope. "I've always wanted to swim, but I'm afraid I'll sink. I'm made of old bones and patchwork skin."
Mr. Whiskers sat beside her. "The water doesn't care what you're made of. It only cares what's in your heart. And your heart wants to dance."
For weeks, the cat taught Penny how to float, how to kick her legs, how to trust the water to hold her up. The other zombies would have laughed, but Penny didn't care. She was too busy discovering the joy of weightlessness, the magic of moving through something that embraced her instead of fearing her.
By summer's end, Penny could glide across the creek like a water lily. She even taught some curious zombie children to swim too, proving that even the most unlikely friends can find unexpected happiness together.
And every full moon, if you visit the old cemetery, you might still see a greenish figure and an orange cat swimming side by side, splishing and splashing in the silver moonlight.
