The Zombie Who Just Wanted to Play

zombiedogrunning

The golden sun peeked through Lily's window, casting warm stripes across her bedroom floor. Beside her bed, Barnaby her fluffy golden dog wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled like a bowl of jelly.

"Today's the day!" Lily whispered, slipping on her sneakers. Barnaby barked excitedly, knowing exactly what that meant – Saturday morning adventure time in the backyard!

Lily loved running through the tall grass, imagining she was a brave explorer discovering magical lands. Barnaby would chase after her, his paws thumping happily against the earth. But this morning, something strange caught Lily's eye near the old oak tree.

Something green and lopsided was shuffling between the leaves. It moved slowly, one arm dragging behind it. Lily's heart beat faster. Was it... a zombie?

She remembered reading about zombies in her storybooks – scary creatures that stumbled around saying "brains." But this zombie looked different. Instead of looking hungry, it looked lonely. Its mismatched button eyes seemed sad, and one of its stuffed ears flopped over its face.

Barnaby crept forward, tail still wagging. The zombie froze.

"Wait!" Lily called. The zombie turned slowly, revealing itself fully – it wasn't a real zombie at all! It was Mr. Miller's old zombie garden decoration, the one that had gone missing from his porch last week after a big storm!

The plastic zombie had somehow made its way across the street and gotten stuck in the bushes. Its paint was chipping, and vines had wrapped around its legs like a cozy blanket.

"Oh, you poor thing," Lily said, laughing now that she wasn't scared. "You're not a scary zombie. You're just lost!"

Barnaby licked the zombie's plastic foot, making Lily giggle. Together, she and her dog carefully untangled the decoration from the branches. Lily carried it home, running across the street with Barnaby bouncing beside her.

When she returned the zombie to Mr. Miller's porch, the elderly man smiled so broadly his wrinkles practically vanished. "My lucky zombie!" he exclaimed. "My granddaughter gave me that before she moved away. I thought the wind took him forever!"

Lily learned something wonderful that day: sometimes the things that seem scariest at first glance are just lonely or lost, waiting for someone kind to help them find their way home. And with a good dog by your side, even the spookiest adventures can end with new friendships.
