The Zombie Who Just Wanted to Play

Tommy loved his red baseball hat more than anything. He wore it everywhere—to school, to the grocery store, even to dinner. The hat made him feel brave, like a superhero ready for adventure.

One Saturday, Tommy was running through the park, clutching his favorite baseball glove. He wanted to practice for the big game next week. But nobody wanted to play with him. All the other kids were busy.

Tommy sat on a bench, his chin trembling. Then something magical happened.

From behind the old oak tree, a green figure shuffled out. It had messy hair, stitched-up clothes, and the kindest eyes Tommy had ever seen. It was a zombie!

Tommy almost jumped up and ran away. Everyone knew zombies were scary. But this zombie just stood there, holding an old, dusty baseball bat.

"Play?" the zombie whispered, his voice sounding like autumn leaves crunching.

Tommy's eyes went wide. "You know baseball?"

The zombie nodded. "Used to play. Before..." He waved his hands mysteriously.

Tommy grinned. "Want to play catch?"

For the next hour, Tommy and his new friend threw the baseball back and forth. The zombie's name was Zed, and he was terrible at catching—but he loved every minute. He laughed a raspy, friendly laugh every time he missed.

"You're pretty good," Zed said. "Better than me. And I've had, well, forever to practice."

Tommy adjusted his red baseball hat and smiled. "Nobody else wanted to play with me today. Thanks, Zed."

"That's what friends do," Zed said. "They show up. Even when they're messy. Even when they're different."

That night, Tommy tucked his baseball hat under his pillow. He knew something wonderful: sometimes the best friends come from the most unexpected places. And sometimes, all you need is someone willing to play.

The big game came, and Tommy played better than ever. But his favorite memory was still that afternoon in the park, running with a friend who had waited a long time just to catch a ball.
