The Zombie Who Just Wanted to Play

Ten-year-old Leo loved his lucky red baseball hat more than anything. He never played a game without it — not baseball, not soccer, not even tag at recess. The hat made him feel brave, like he could do anything.

One afternoon, Leo was practicing his swing in the park when something strange shuffled out from behind the old oak tree. It was greenish-gray, with messy hair and clothes that looked like they'd been through a tornado. A zombie!

Leo's heart thumped. Zombies were supposed to be scary, right? But this one just stood there, watching him with sad, droopy eyes. It pointed a bony finger at Leo's baseball.

"You... you want to play?" Leo asked surprised.

The zombie nodded slowly.

Leo thought for a moment. His grandma always said, "Everyone deserves a friend." And this zombie didn't look mean — just lonely.

"Okay!" Leo grinned. "But first, let me show you something else. My friend Maria left her padel racquet here yesterday. Have you ever tried padel? It's like tennis but more fun!"

The zombie shook its head, but its eyes lit up with curiosity.

Leo handed over the padel racquet. At first, the zombie's movements were slow and clumsy. But as Leo tossed balls gently, something magical happened. With each hit, the zombie stood taller. Its gray skin turned rosier. Its messy hair smoothed out.

By the time Maria returned to the park, the zombie wasn't a zombie anymore — just a regular kid named Sam!

"I was under a sleeping spell," Sam explained, laughing. "I needed fun and friendship to wake up!"

That day, Leo learned something important: sometimes the things that seem scary are just lonely hearts waiting for a friend. And sometimes, all it takes to break a spell is a game, a laugh, and someone willing to share their favorite sport.

From then on, Sam, Leo, and Maria played everything together — baseball, padel, you name it. And Leo still wore his lucky red hat, but he knew the real magic wasn't in the hat at all. It was in friendship.
