The Zombie Who Just Wanted to Play
Whiskers was no ordinary cat. This ginger tabby loved two things more than anything: napping in sunbeams and watching the neighborhood kids play baseball in the park. Every afternoon, he'd sit on the fence, his golden eyes following the flying ball with dreams of one day joining the game.
One afternoon, just as the kids were packing up, Whiskers noticed something strange. From behind the old oak tree shuffled a greenish figure with messy hair and tattered clothes. It was a zombie! But instead of looking scary, this zombie looked... lonely. He held a dusty baseball glove in one hand and watched the kids walk away with sad eyes.
Whiskers's heart went out to him. The cat hopped down from the fence and trotted over. The zombie froze, then slowly knelt down. "You're not scared?" he whispered, his voice sounding like autumn leaves.
"Why would I be scared?" Whiskers meowed. "You have a baseball glove!"
The zombie's face lit up—well, as much as a zombie's face can. "I'm Zed. I've loved baseball for hundreds of years. But everyone runs away before I can ask to play."
"Not me," said Whiskers bravely. "I have an idea."
The next morning, the neighborhood kids arrived at the park to find something amazing. Zed stood at home plate with Whiskers perched on his shoulder. The zombie tapped a baseball with his bat—WHAP!—and the ball soared into the sky. Whiskers cheered, "Meow!"
The kids stood frozen, until brave little Mia stepped forward. "Can I pitch to you?"
Zed nodded enthusiastically. For the first time in centuries, he played baseball. He was terrible at running but amazing at hitting home runs. Whiskers became the official mascot, chasing balls and cheering from the sidelines.
By sunset, Zed had made twelve new friends. The zombie who just wanted to play had finally found his team, all because one friendly cat looked past appearances and saw a baseball buddy instead.
Sometimes the best friends come in the most surprising packages.
