The Zombie Who Just Wanted to Float
One hot summer afternoon, Rusty the golden retriever and Whiskers the orange tabby cat stood at the edge of the old swimming hole. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves overhead.
"I'm going swimming!" Rusty barked happily, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled. He loved nothing more than splashing in the cool water on hot days.
Whiskers dipped one paw in cautiously. "It looks deep," she meowed, her green eyes wide. "What if there's something scary down there?"
"Don't be silly!" Rusty splashed into the water, sending ripples across the surface. "This is the most fun place in the whole world!"
But just then, something strange emerged from behind the old willow tree. It was a zombie — but not a scary one. This zombie had bright purple flowers braided into its green hair, and instead of groaning, it was humming a cheerful tune.
"Hello there!" the zombie said in a friendly voice. "My name is Zephyr. I've been watching you two play for weeks."
Whiskers scrambled up the nearest tree, her fur standing on end. "Stay back! Zombies are scary! They eat brains!"
Zephyr shook their head, making the flower braids sway. "Not me. I'm a vegetarian zombie. I only eat vegetables and friendship. Plus, I've always wanted to try swimming, but I was afraid everyone would run away."
Rusty paddled over to the edge. "You want to swim with us? That would be amazing! Come on in, the water's perfect!"
"Really?" Zephyr's face lit up. "You're not scared?"
"Nope!" Rusty splashed water toward his new friend. "In this swimming hole, everyone is welcome. Even zombies who love flowers!"
Whiskers climbed down from the tree, her curiosity overcoming her fear. "I suppose if Rusty trusts you... but you have to promise not to splash too much. Cats don't like getting their ears wet."
"I promise!" Zephyr stepped into the water, and for the first time in their undead life, felt the joy of floating. The three new friends spent the rest of the afternoon swimming, splashing, and learning that sometimes, the things we think are scary might just be lonely — and all they need is a little friendship to become something wonderful.
As the sun began to set, Zephyr thanked them. "You two taught me that being different doesn't mean you can't belong. Now I have friends, and I learned to swim! This is the best day ever!"
And from that day on, whenever anyone visited the old swimming hole, they might just see a dog, a cat, and a flower-loving zombie, all swimming together under the warm summer sun.
