The Zombie Who Just Wanted a Friend

In a forest where the streams flowed with sparkling blue water and the trees whispered ancient secrets, there lived a great brown bear named Barnaby. Barnaby was the kindest bear anyone had ever met. He spent his days helping small animals cross the river and sharing his honey with anyone who was hungry.

One sunny afternoon, Barnaby heard sobbing near the water's edge. He followed the sound and found a little orange fox named Felix sitting on a rock, tears streaming down his fluffy face.

"What's wrong, little friend?" Barnaby asked gently.

"I saw something scary," Felix sniffled. "Something terrible! It's coming from the old hollow tree. It walks all stiff and strange. My mother said it's a zombie!"

Barnaby's eyes grew wide. Everyone in the forest had heard the legend of the zombie who lived in the hollow tree. Parents told their children to stay away. "It will gobble you up," they warned.

But Barnaby was brave. "Come with me, Felix. We'll face this zombie together."

Hand in paw (or rather, paw in paw), they crept toward the hollow tree. The ground crunched beneath their feet. Suddenly, a figure stumbled out — walking stiffly, arms outstretched, making a low groaning sound.

Felix hid behind Barnaby's leg. "It's the zombie!"

Barnaby took a deep breath and stepped forward. "Hello? Are you... hungry? We have berries and honey!"

The zombie stopped. Slowly, it reached up and pulled off its face — which wasn't a face at all, but a mask! Underneath was a shy little badger girl named Bella.

"I was just practicing my Halloween costume," she whispered. "I wanted to surprise everyone, but I think I only scared them."

Barnaby and Felix looked at each other and burst out laughing. Soon Bella was laughing too.

"That was the best trick ever!" Felix exclaimed. "Will you be my friend?"

Bella grinned. "I'd love that."

From that day on, the three friends played together by the water every afternoon. And whenever someone new moved to the forest and heard scary stories about the zombie, they would just smile and say, "Some things aren't what they seem. Sometimes, you just have to be brave enough to look beneath the mask."
