The Zombie Who Hugged

bearzombiefriend

Barnaby was a bear who lived in the hollow of an ancient oak tree. He had soft brown fur and a heart-shaped patch of white on his chest. But Barnaby was lonely.

Every evening, he watched children play in the meadow beyond the forest. They laughed and ran and held hands. Barnaby wished for a friend.

One autumn afternoon, something strange tumbled out of the sky. It wasn't a bird. It wasn't a leaf. It was a stuffed toy rabbit, missing an ear and dragging cotton from its side.

"Oh no," whispered a little girl's voice from the meadow. "Zombie Bunny! Come back!"

Barnaby peeked from his tree. A girl with curly red hair was running toward the forest, chasing the floppy toy.

The toy rabbit landed with a soft thump at the base of Barnaby's tree. Its one remaining ear twitched. Then—impossibly—its button eye blinked.

Barnaby gasped. "You're alive?"

"I'm Zombie Bunny," the rabbit squeaked. "I was lost, then found, then lost again. But I keep going because someone loves me."

The girl reached the tree and stopped. She saw Barnaby watching from above. Her eyes went wide.

"A bear!" she cried.

But Zombie Bunny hopped between them. "Wait! This bear helped me."

The girl looked at Barnaby, really looked at him. She saw his gentle eyes and the white heart on his chest. Slowly, she stepped closer.

"I'm Lily," she said. "This is Zombie Bunny. My grandma fixed him after my dog chewed him up. She said he's a zombie now because he came back to life. But he's still my best friend."

Barnaby felt something warm bloom in his chest. "I'm Barnaby."

"Will you be our friend too, Barnaby?" asked Zombie Bunny.

Barnaby nodded. He had never felt so happy.

From that day on, Barnaby had two friends who visited him every afternoon. They shared berries and stories. They learned that friends come in all shapes—even bears and zombie bunnies—and that the best friends are the ones who never give up on each other.

And Barnaby discovered something magical: friendship isn't about being perfect. It's about being there, heart and all, for someone who needs you.
