The Zombie Who Guarded the Sphinx
Lily discovered the magic cable quite by accident. It was a golden thread that stretched from her attic window all the way into the clouds, shimmering like a spider's web at sunrise.
"Where does it go?" she whispered, tracing its gleaming length with her finger.
Without thinking, she grabbed hold—and WHOOSH! The cable pulled her up, up, UP into a sky painted in swirls of purple and pink.
At the top stood a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like sunrise clouds.
"Welcome, brave one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "But first, you must pass my guardian."
From behind a stone pillar shuffled a zombie—slow, green, and with messy hair sticking every which way.
Lily gasped. "A zombie! Are you... scary?"
The zombie sighed, and his shoulders slumped. "Everyone thinks that. But I'm just Zed. I'm slow because I'm careful. I'm green because that's what color I am. And I'm NOT scary—I'm sweet!" He held out a hand with a colorful lollipop.
Lily giggled. "You're not scary at all, Zed! You're nice!"
The sphinx smiled, her eyes twinkling. "Exactly. Many people judge before they truly see. The greatest magic is friendship with those others misunderstand."
"I have a riddle," the sphinx continued. "What must be broken before you can use it?"
Lily thought hard. Zed shuffled his feet. "Hmm... broken..."
"An egg!" they shouted together.
"Correct!" The sphinx nodded. "You have learned well—true friends see with their hearts, not just their eyes."
Lily hugged Zed goodbye and slid down the magic cable, her heart full. She couldn't wait to tell everyone about her new friend—the zombie who wasn't scary at all.
Sometimes, the most wonderful discoveries come from the most unexpected places.
