The Zombie Who Found Sunshine
In the shadowy forest behind Willow Creek Elementary, there lived a zombie named Zed. But Zed wasn't like the zombies in scary stories. He was simply lonely. His gray skin felt cold, and his cloudy eyes had forgotten how to sparkle.
Every afternoon, Zed watched children play through the fence, wishing he could join them. But zombies and playgrounds didn't mix, or so he thought.
One October afternoon, something tumbled over the fence — a round, bright orange rolling like a tiny sun across the fallen leaves. Zed crept closer. He'd never seen anything so cheerful. The orange smelled like sunshine itself.
"You found my orange!" said a small voice. Zed froze.
A girl named Lily stood there, but she wasn't running away. Instead, she knelt and pushed something green toward him. "This is spinach from my garden. It's full of vitamins that make you strong."
"Vitamins?" Zed rasped.
"Magic little things in food that make you feel amazing," Lily explained. "Oranges have vitamin C for happiness. Spinach has vitamins that make you brave."
Zed tried them both. The orange burst with sweet tanginess. The spinach tasted crisp and fresh. Something strange happened — warmth spread through his cold gray fingers. His cloudy eyes began to clear.
"You're not scary at all," Lily said, smiling. "You're just hungry."
Every day after school, Lily brought oranges and spinach from her garden. With each bite, Zed grew stronger. His skin turned from gray to a gentle rosy color. His eyes began to sparkle like stars.
But the best part wasn't the vitamins. It was the friendship.
When Halloween arrived, Zed emerged from the forest not as a monster, but as a friend. The children cheered when they saw him — their special guardian who taught them that good food and kind hearts could transform anyone.
Zed finally understood. He hadn't needed to become something different. He'd only needed someone to see him as he really was — a friend waiting to happen.
And somewhere in the enchanted forest, the oranges grew sweeter, and the spinach grew greener, as if nature itself was celebrating the day a zombie found sunshine in the kindness of a friend.
