The Zombie Who Forgot to Smile

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Dust motes danced in beams of sunlight, and old trunks held secrets from long ago. That's where she found it—a small blue bottle labeled 'JOY VITAMIN.'

Her grandmother's cat, Whiskers, rubbed against Lily's leg. 'Meow?'

'It says it's a vitamin,' Lily whispered. 'But I think it's magic.'

The bottle rattled. Inside were sparkling pills that glowed like tiny stars. Lily remembered the children in the park who moved so slowly, with gray faces and drooping shoulders. Everyone called them zombies. They never played. They never laughed. They just shuffled around, looking at the ground.

'They forgot how to be happy,' Lily's mom had said.

Lily looked at Whiskers. The cat purred loudly, as if agreeing.

'We have to help them,' Lily said.

She slipped the bottle into her pocket and hurried to the park. Three zombie children sat on a bench, staring at their shoes. Lily approached slowly, not wanting to scare them.

'Hello,' she said softly. 'My name's Lily. This is Whiskers.' She pointed to the cat, who was winding around her legs.

One of the zombie children looked up. His eyes were dull, like foggy windows.

'I have something that might help,' Lily said. She took out the blue bottle and read the label again. 'One joy vitamin, for hearts that have forgotten to smile.'

She handed a sparkling pill to each child. They hesitated, then swallowed them.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, color rushed back into their cheeks. Their eyes brightened. One girl giggled. Then another smiled. Finally, the boy laughed—a real, joyful laugh.

'Want to play tag?' he asked.

Whiskers meowed and darted away, and they all chased after him, running and laughing under the golden sun.

Lily watched them play and smiled. Sometimes, the most powerful magic is just a little joy, shared with friends.
