The Zombie Who Forgot to Be Scary
Lily loved her curly hair. It bounced when she ran and shimmered like sunshine. Every morning, she'd count the spirals while her mom braided them gently.
One rainy afternoon, Lily found something strange behind the old television. It was a thick black cable, wiggling like a worm! She pulled it, and suddenly—POOF!—a little zombie popped out.
But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He had bright green skin, sparkly purple eyes, and the biggest, friendliest smile Lily had ever seen. He wore a polka-dot bowtie and carried a bouquet of flowers.
"Hello!" he said cheerfully. "I'm Zippy! I've been stuck in that cable for fifty years waiting for someone to find me!"
Lily giggled. "You're not scary like the zombies in my storybooks."
Zippy sighed. "I keep trying to be scary, but I always end up being too friendly. Want to see my scary face?" He crossed his eyes and stuck out his tongue.
Lily laughed so hard she fell over. "That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!"
Zippy looked sad. His green skin turned a little pale. "Maybe I'll never be a proper zombie."
Lily sat up and patted his shoulder. "Maybe you're not supposed to be scary. Maybe you're special because you're different."
"Really?" Zippy's eyes sparkled.
"Really!" Lily took his hand. "Come on, let's go play!"
They spent the afternoon having the best adventure ever. Zippy made flowers grow by singing to them, and Lily's magical hair could sense when friends needed help. Together, they rescued a kitten stuck in a tree and helped an elderly lady carry her groceries.
When the sun began to set, Zippy had to return to his cable home. But he promised to visit whenever Lily pulled the special cord.
"Being different is wonderful," Zippy said as he disappeared. "Thank you for showing me."
Lily touched her curly hair and smiled. Some zombies didn't need to be scary to be magical. And sometimes, the best friends were the ones who were exactly themselves, no matter what anyone expected.
