The Zombie Who Forgot to Be Scary
Lily was skipping stones at Moonlight Pond when something magical happened. A bright orange goldfish popped its head above the water and said, "Psst! Follow me! I know where the adventures hide!" Lily's eyes went wide. A talking goldfish! She grabbed her backpack and followed the shimmering fish as it swam up a sparkling stream that flowed like liquid rainbow. The stream led her into Whispering Woods, where tall trees danced and fireflies glowed even though it was daytime. That's when she saw him — a fluffy red fox with the brightest amber eyes she'd ever seen. The fox was sitting on a tree stump, looking worried. "What's wrong?" Lily asked softly. The fox sighed. "My friend Barnaby is stuck. He's trapped in the Gloom Cave, and he's too scared to come out." Lily frowned. "Who's Barnaby?" "He's a zombie," whispered the fox. "But not a scary one. He's just... lonely." Lily had heard about zombies in stories. They were supposed to be scary and groan "BRAAAINS" and chase people. But this fox didn't seem afraid — just worried. The goldfish had swum into a magical puddle and was now floating beside them. "Barnaby wasn't always a zombie," the goldfish bubbled. "He used to be the friendliest guardian of the forest. But one day, the Gloom Cloud trapped him in its cave, and now he's forgotten how to be happy." Lily's heart swelled with courage. "Then let's help him remember!" The fox smiled, his fluffy tail wagging. Together — girl, fox, and magical goldfish in her pocket — they marched to the Gloom Cave. Inside, sitting on a rock, was a greenish figure with patches of orange hair and mismatched buttons for eyes. He looked sad. "B-B-BRAINS?" he muttered, but his voice sounded lonely, not scary. "Hello!" Lily said brightly. "We brought you something!" She pulled from her backpack her favorite thing in the world — her grandma's homemade sunshine cookies. The zombie's button eyes widened. "Cookie?" he whispered. Lily nodded and held one out. The zombie took it. He took a bite. And suddenly, his green face began to glow. "Yummy," he said, and for the first time, he smiled. It wasn't a scary smile at all. It was the warmest, happiest smile Lily had ever seen. The Gloom Cloud faded away. "I forgot," Barnaby said softly. "I forgot that kindness tastes better than anything." The fox did a happy dance. The goldfish swam happy circles in the air. And Lily realized something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to share a cookie with them. From that day on, Barnaby was no longer the lonely zombie. He was Barnaby the Cookie Guardian, and every child who visited Whispering Woods left with a story — and sometimes a cookie. Because Lily discovered that magic isn't about spells or potions. Magic is about being brave enough to be kind to someone who needs it most.
