The Zombie Who Forgot How to Spook
Lily's fluffy brown dog, Barnaby, had the wiggliest tail in the whole neighborhood. Every morning, he would jump on her bed and lick her face until she giggled. But today, Barnaby wouldn't wake up. His tail didn't wiggle. His nose didn't sniff. He just lay there, completely still.
Lily brushed her messy hair and knelt beside her best friend. "Barnaby?" she whispered. He didn't move. Something sparkled in his fur—a tiny golden glow that pulsed like a heartbeat. Lily gasped. It was fairy dust!
"Oh no!" cried a tiny voice. Lily looked down to see a thumb-sized fairy with purple wings fluttering near Barnaby's ear. "I was practicing my sleeping spell and I missed the flower pot! Your poor dog is in a magical sleep!
Lily's eyes went wide. "So he's like... like a zombie dog?"
The fairy blushed. "Well, yes, but without the scary part. He's just snoozing until sunset! Unless..." She tapped her chin. "Unless you help me find the Moonflower meadow. The nectar there can wake him up!"
Lily grabbed her backpack. "Let's go! Barnaby would never stay asleep when there's an adventure to be had!"
Hand in hand with the fairy (who rode on Lily's shoulder), they climbed the tallest oak tree, jumped over whispering creeks, and followed a trail of glowing butterflies. At last, they found the meadow shimmering with silver flowers that bloomed only under the sun.
"We made it!" cheered the fairy. She gathered nectar into a tiny acorn cup while Lily twirled in the magical light, her hair catching stardust.
Back home, Lily let three drops of nectar fall on Barnaby's nose. His tail gave one little wiggle. Then two. Then—WHOOSH! Barnaby bounced up, barking happily and covering Lily in kisses.
"My brave girl," her mom said from the doorway, smiling. "Having another adventure?"
Lily hugged Barnaby tight. The fairy winked from the windowsill before flying away. Lily learned that day that even scary things like zombies aren't so scary when you face them with courage, kindness, and a little bit of magic. And she never forgot—sometimes the best adventures happen when things don't go quite as planned.
