The Zombie Who Forgot How to Spook
Lily loved swimming in the crystal-blue lake behind her house. Every summer day, she'd dive beneath the sparkling surface, imagining she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom. But today, something magical happened.
As Lily resurfaced from a particularly deep dive, she saw him—a little green zombie sitting on a mossy rock, dropping pebbles into the water. He looked more confused than scary.
"Hello," said Lily, treading water. "Are you lost?"
The zombie sighed. "I'm Zippy. I'm supposed to be spooky, but I keep forgetting how. Everyone runs away before I can even say 'boo.'"
Lily smiled. "Maybe you need a new approach. Want to be my friend instead?"
Zippy's eyes widened. "Nobody ever wanted to be my friend before!"
"Well, I do," said Lily, swimming to the rocky shore. "And I have an idea. Let's take a picture!" She pulled out her mom's old iPhone from her beach bag and snapped a photo of them together—Zippy making his silliest face, Lily dripping wet with laughter.
"Show me!" Zippy bounced excitedly. When he saw the photo, something magical sparkled inside him. "I don't look scary at all. I look... happy!"
"Exactly," said Lily. "You don't have to be scary to be special. You just have to be yourself."
That summer, Zippy became the lake's most unusual guardian. He helped lost ducklings find their mothers, taught baby fish to swim against the current, and even organized underwater tea parties with the frogs. The other zombies eventually came looking for Zippy, expecting a spooky creature. Instead, they found something better—a friend.
Soon, the whole zombie group learned that kindness was more powerful than any spooky spell. They became the lake's gentle protectors, and Lily knew she had discovered something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to see who they really are inside.
And every time Lily looked at that photo on the iPhone, she smiled, remembering the day she met the zombie who forgot how to spook—but remembered how to love.
