The Zombie Who Forgot How to Smile

In the sleepy town of Sunshine Valley, there lived a zombie named Zeb. But Zeb wasn't like the zombies in scary stories. He didn't want brains. He didn't groan or shamble in the dark. Zeb was just… tired.

He had been a zombie for so long that he'd forgotten how to be anything else. His skin was pale as moonlight, his movements slow as molasses, and his smile had faded away completely. The other children in Sunshine Valley would run away when they saw him coming, which made Zeb very lonely.

One sunny morning, a brave girl named Lily was sitting on her front porch eating a ripe, juicy orange. When she saw Zeb shuffling past, she didn't run. Instead, she noticed something nobody else had ever noticed—Zeb looked sad.

"Hey, Mr. Zombie!" Lily called out. "Would you like an orange?"

Zeb stopped. Nobody had ever offered him anything before, except frightened looks.

"Oranges…" Zeb whispered, his voice rusty from disuse. "I haven't had an orange since I was a regular boy."

Lily hopped off the porch and handed him the brightest, roundest orange from her basket. "This one's extra sweet. My grandma says oranges are full of vitamin C, which makes you strong and happy."

Zeb took the orange carefully. As he peeled it, the citrusy scent tickled his nose. Something strange happened then. With every bite Zeb took, a little bit of color returned to his pale cheeks. With every sweet, juicy mouthful, his eyes sparkled a tiny bit brighter.

"I'm happy," Zeb said, surprised. "I haven't felt happy in a hundred years."

Lily smiled. "See? The vitamin C is working! But I think the secret ingredient is friendship."

From that day on, Zeb wasn't the lonely zombie of Sunshine Valley anymore. He became Zeb, the friend who shared oranges and told wonderful stories about the olden days. And whenever anyone felt tired or gray, Zeb would appear with a bright orange and say, "This will make you feel magical again."

The children learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking people just need someone to see them with kindness instead of fear. And Zeb learned that the best cure for being a zombie isn't a potion or a spell—it's a friend who shares her oranges.
