The Zombie Who Forgot How to Smile
In the sleepy town of Willowbrook, there lived a zombie named Zeb. But Zeb wasn't like the zombies in scary stories. He was simply a boy who had forgotten how to smile, ever since his puppy dog Barnaby had run away three years ago.
Every morning, Zeb would trudge to school, his heavy boots leaving small clouds of dust behind him. Other children ran and laughed, but Zeb just shuffled along, gray as a cloudy sky.
One afternoon, Zeb found something strange dangling from the old oak tree—a sparkly golden cable that seemed to hum with magic. Curious, he gave it a gentle tug. WHOOSH! The cable pulled him up, up, up into the tree's hidden branches, where he discovered a tiny door.
Inside, he met a wise old owl named Professor Hoot, who peered at Zeb over spectacles made of moonbeams. "Ah, a smile-zombie! I have just the cure." The owl reached into a jar and pulled out a glowing orange pill. "This is a vitamin G—for Giggles!"
Zeb took the vitamin, and suddenly, he felt a warm tingle in his toes. Professor Hoot placed his feathery palm on Zeb's forehead and whispered, "The cure works best when you think of something wonderful."
Zeb closed his eyes and remembered Barnaby's wagging tail, his soft fur, and how they used to play chase in the meadow. A tiny smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Then he heard a familiar bark below.
He looked down to see a scruffy dog with one floppy ear—it was Barnaby! He hadn't run away; he had been found by a farmer in the next town and had finally escaped to find his way home.
Zeb slid down the golden cable, his smile growing wider with every inch. When he reached the ground, Barnaby jumped into his arms, licking his face with puppy kisses.
From that day on, Zeb was never a zombie again. He learned that happiness sometimes needs a little help, but the best cure is love that finds its way back home. And every night, he would press his palm against Barnaby's warm fur, grateful for the magical day that taught him that even the gloomiest heart can learn to smile again.
