The Zombie Who Forgot How to Smile
Lily had the most magnificent **hair** in all of Willowbrook Elementary. It corkscrewed in bouncy copper springs that bounced when she walked and shimmered like autumn leaves in sunlight. But Lily's favorite thing wasn't her hair—it was her very best **friend**, a stuffed toy zombie named Zimmy.
Zimby was green and floppy with stitchy eyes and a button nose. He'd been a birthday gift from Lily's grandmother, who'd whispered, "Some magic just needs friendship to wake it up."
One Tuesday, something extraordinary happened. Lily was playing with her mom's old **iPhone**, showing Zimby pictures of butterflies and rainbows, when the phone buzzed and glowed purple. Zimby's button nose twinkled.
"Friend Zimby hungry," Zimby said.
Lily nearly dropped the phone! "You can TALK?!"
"Zimby forget how to smile," the toy zombie whispered. "Need magic **vitamin** from Happy Garden. Can you help?"
Lily's heart raced with excitement. A quest! An adventure! She grabbed her backpack, stuffed Zimby inside, and tiptoed to the garden behind their house. The iPhone's purple light guided them like a magical lantern.
In the moonlit garden, they found the glowing orange flowers Grandma had planted. "Friendship vitamins," Lily breathed, picking three soft petals that smelled like sunshine and giggles.
Zimby ate one. His green fuzz grew softer. He ate another. His stitchy eyes crinkled upward. The third petal—and Zimby smiled the biggest, goofiest smile Lily had ever seen.
"Thank you, best **friend**," Zimby beamed, hugging Lily with soft fuzzy arms. "Kindness is the real magic."
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the smallest acts of friendship wake up the biggest magic. And from then on, whenever anyone asked about her magnificent hair, Lily would say, "It's not the hair that's magical—it's having friends who make you smile."
