The Zombie Who Forgot How to Scare

Lily was running through the sprinklers in her backyard when she spotted something green poking out from under the porch. She crept closer, water dripping from her swimsuit, and discovered the strangest thing she'd ever seen—a little zombie with patchy hair and one button eye, sitting sadly on a mossy rock.

"Are you lost?" Lily asked, kneeling beside him. The zombie looked up with a surprised expression.

"I think so," he said in a raspy but gentle voice. "I fell out of someone's iPhone while they were playing my game. I don't know how to get back."

Lily's eyes widened. "You came from inside a phone? That's amazing! I'm Lily. What's your name?"

"Zimby," the zombie replied, scratching his head. "I was supposed to be scary, but I don't think I'm very good at it. Everyone just laughs when I try to moan."

Lily giggled. "Maybe you're not meant to be scary. Maybe you're meant to be a friend!"

Zimby's face lit up. "A friend? I've never had a friend before. In my game, everyone runs away from me."

"Well, I'm running toward you, not away!" Lily said, grabbing his hand. "Come on, I want to show you something wonderful."

She led Zimby through her garden, past the roses and the vegetable patch, until they reached the sparkling blue pool. "This is where I go swimming when it's hot. Want to try?"

Zimby's eyes grew wide. "I've never been swimming before! Do zombies sink?"

"Only one way to find out!" Lily said, jumping into the cool water with a splash.

Zimby dipped one foot in, then the other, and soon he was floating beside her, doing a funny little zombie paddle. "I'm swimming!" he cheered, water splashing everywhere. "I'm actually swimming!"

For the rest of the afternoon, Lily and her new friend swam races, played tag, and practiced different strokes. Zimby learned to dive (with a small splash) and even tried the backstroke, though he kept bumping into the pool walls.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Zimby looked at Lily with a warm smile. "I'm glad I fell out of that iPhone. Being scary isn't nearly as fun as having a friend."

Lily hugged her new friend, water dripping from both of them. "And I'm glad you're here. Sometimes the best surprises come when we're not looking for them."

That night, as Lily showed Zimby how to sleep in a cozy pillow fort, she realized something important: sometimes the things we think are different or scary are just waiting for someone to give them a chance. And somewhere, in a magical world beyond screens, a little zombie had finally found where he truly belonged.
