The Zombie Who Forgot How to Scare

Ten-year-old Leo was hiding under his blankets during the biggest thunderstorm of the summer. His orange tabby cat, Marmalade, was curled tight against his chest, purring like a tiny motor to drown out the thunder.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck so close that the whole house shook. CRACK!

When Leo peeked out from his blanket, something strange was happening in his room. His toy zombie—the green one with mismatched buttons for eyes that he'd made at school—was wiggling on his desk.

"Did you see that?" Leo whispered to Marmalade.

The cat's eyes went wide, golden and glowing in the dark.

The plastic zombie sat up and looked around with its button eyes. Then it spoke in a voice that sounded like dry leaves crunching together.

"Excuse me," said the zombie. "But I think I'm lost."

Leo's mouth fell open. "You're alive!"

"Well, sort of," the zombie said sadly. "I was cursed by a wizard who didn't like my monster costume. I've been stuck as a toy for twenty years, waiting for lightning magic to wake me up. The problem is..." It looked down at its green plastic hands. "I don't remember how to be a monster anymore. I don't even remember my real name."

Marmalade hopped onto the desk and rubbed her cheek against the zombie's plastic arm. The zombie smiled, and Leo noticed something—it wasn't scary at all. It looked lonely.

"You can stay here," Leo said. "Marmalade and I will help you remember who you are."

For weeks, the zombie (who Leo started calling Zee) learned about the world all over again. It discovered that monsters weren't supposed to be mean—they were supposed to protect people from scary things. It learned that cats make excellent teachers, especially about napping in sunbeams and chasing dust bunnies.

One night, another storm rolled in. Lightning flashed across the sky.

"I remember now," Zee said, its button eyes twinkling. "I wasn't a monster. I was a guardian! I was supposed to watch over children who were afraid of storms."

Zee stood tall, and green sparkles swirled around it. The plastic began to soften into real skin. The buttons became warm, caring eyes.

"Thank you," the newly-human guardian said, hugging Leo and Marmalade. "For seeing me, not a monster. For being my friend when I was just a toy."

And that's how Leo learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone to see who they really are inside. Now, whenever storms come, Zee the guardian sits by Leo's window, keeping the nightmares away while Marmalade purrs them both to sleep.
