The Zombie Who Forgot How to Play
Lily loved her orange tabby cat, Mango. Every afternoon after school, they'd play catch in the backyard with Mango's favorite toy—a small, squeaky baseball.
One autumn afternoon, the wind whispered secrets through the trees. Lily threw the baseball a little too hard, and it sailed over the fence into the old, foggy cemetery next door.
"Don't worry, Mango," Lily said bravely. "I'll get it."
She crept through the creaky gate, her sneakers crunching on fallen leaves. Suddenly, a green hand poked up from the ground! Then another! A whole zombie slowly emerged, but this zombie looked different. It wore a dusty baseball cap and held a familiar baseball glove.
"Found this," rumbled the zombie in a voice like crackling autumn leaves, handing Lily the orange baseball. "Used to play, back when I was alive."
Lily gasped. "You played baseball?"
"Best pitcher in town, 1892," the zombie nodded, his button eyes twinkling. "Name's Zeke. Haven't played in... well, a long time."
Mango the cat rubbed against Zeke's leg, purring loudly. Zeke smiled, showing just one tooth.
"Would you like to play with us?" Lily asked suddenly.
Zeke's jaw dropped. "With... with me? But I'm—"
"A zombie?" Lily finished. "So what? Mango likes you. And you have a glove!"
For the next hour, they played catch. Zeke taught Lily how to pitch a proper curveball, and Mango chased every ball that hit the ground. Zeke laughed for the first time in over a hundred years, a sound like wind chimes.
"Friendship isn't about being the same," Lily told her mom later. "It's about playing together."
Every week, Lily and Mango visited Zeke at sunset. They'd play baseball until the stars came out. And sometimes, if you listen closely on autumn evenings, you can still hear them—a girl, her cat, and a zombie who remembered that the best games are the ones played together.
