The Zombie Who Forgot How to Dance
Lila loved the beach, especially the old palm tree that bent over the sand like a friendly giant reading a book. She would sit in its shade and listen to the leaves whisper secrets in the wind.
One afternoon, something strange washed up on shore. It was green and bumpy, with wild seaweed hair and eyes that looked sad and foggy. It shuffled slowly through the sand, moving like it had forgotten how to dance.
"A zombie!" Lila gasped, remembering stories from her big brother. But this zombie didn't look scary at all. It looked... lonely.
The zombie stopped and looked at her with foggy green eyes. "I think I forgot who I am," it said in a voice like bubbles popping.
Lila looked at the zombie, then at her palm. She held it out, open and friendly. "I'm Lila. Want to be friends?"
The zombie's eyes brightened. Just a little. "I had a friend once. A long time ago. Before I became all foggy inside."
"What's your name?" Lila asked.
The zombie thought so hard that seaweed fell from its chin. "I think... I think it was Zim. Or maybe Zam. Or ZOOM!" The zombie tried to zoom, but only managed a tiny hop.
Lila laughed. "Zoom is perfect!"
Every day, Lila met Zoom under the palm tree. She taught him games. He taught her how to make sand castles that never washed away. The more they played, the less foggy Zoom's eyes became.
One day, Zoom said, "Lila, I remember now. I'm a Sea Sprit! I was supposed to make the ocean sparkle, but I got lost in a storm and forgot my magic."
"Your magic didn't disappear," Lila said. "It was just waiting for a friend to help you find it again."
Zoom smiled, and suddenly, he began to glow. Soft green light pulsed through him, brighter and brighter, until he was shining like a miniature moon. He zoomed around Lila, leaving trails of sparkles in the air.
"You're beautiful!" Lila cheered.
Zoom took her hand—or what felt like a hand, even though it was made of sea foam and magic. "Thank you, Lila. You saw a friend when everyone else would have seen a monster. That's the real magic."
Zoom returned to the ocean, but he never really left. Every time Lila visits the beach, she finds extra sparkly shells and perfect sand castles waiting for her under the palm tree. And sometimes, when the sun hits the water just right, she can still see her friend Zoom, dancing through the waves and making the whole ocean shine.
The palm tree whispers it too: true friends help each other remember who they really are.
