The Zombie Who Forgot How to Be Scary

One sunny afternoon, Lily discovered something strange floating in her backyard swimming pool. It wasn't a leaf or a toy—it was a small green zombie, looking very confused.

"Are you okay?" Lily called, pulling her favorite red hat tighter against the breeze.

The zombie sat up, water dripping from his bumpy head. "I think I forgot something important," he said sadly. "I'm supposed to be scary, but I don't remember how."

Lily giggled. "Maybe you don't need to be scary. What if you're supposed to be something else?"

Just then, her toy bull Fernando, who usually sat by the pool, seemed to wiggle. The bull's plastic eyes twinkled in the sunlight.

"I could help!" said a voice. Lily looked down to see Fernando was actually speaking! "I know about being brave instead of scary."

The zombie looked hopeful. "You could teach me?"

"But first," said Lily, climbing into the pool, "you need to learn something wonderful. Swimming isn't just about moving through water. It's about trusting yourself and making friends with the waves."

The zombie hesitated. "What if I sink?"

"Then Fernando and I will help you float," Lily promised. "That's what friends do."

All afternoon, they practiced together. The zombie learned to kick his legs (even though they were a bit stiff). Fernando cheered from the pool edge, and Lily's red hat kept watch like a bright red sun.

By sunset, the zombie wasn't scary at all—he was the best swimming buddy anyone could ask for.

"I figured it out!" the zombie exclaimed, doing a happy backstroke. "I wasn't supposed to be scary. I was supposed to be a friend."

Lily smiled. "Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you forget who you're supposed to be and just start swimming toward who you really are."

And that's how a zombie, a girl, and a brave toy bull learned that the scariest thing isn't monsters—it's missing out on wonderful friendships waiting right in your own backyard pool.
