The Zombie Who Couldn't Swim

Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd rush to Crystal Lake, her favorite swimming spot, where the water sparkled like diamonds under the warm sun. But this summer was different. The other children whispered about a zombie who lived near the old oak tree at the edge of the lake.

"He's green and creepy," said Tommy. "He moans all night long!"

Lily wasn't scared. She was curious. One evening, as the sky turned a brilliant orange, she spotted him—a lanky figure shuffling near the water's edge. He DID look green, but not like a monster. More like... moss?

"Hello?" Lily called out.

The zombie jumped. "Oh! Hello there. I'm Zed."

"Are you... a real zombie?" Lily asked, swimming closer to shore.

Zed sighed, his shoulders drooping. "I'm supposed to be. I practice every day—moaning, shuffling, reaching out with spooky arms. But I'm terrible at it. I keep falling into things, and I don't like scaring people. I just want to make friends."

Lily smiled. "Do you know how to swim?"

Zed shook his head sadly. "Zombies don't swim. We just... lumber."

"Want me to teach you?" Lily offered.

For the next hour, Zed learned to float, kick, and glide. The orange sunset painted the water as he laughed—a zombie who laughed!—splashing and playing like any regular kid.

"You're not scary at all," Lily said. "You're just Zed."

"And you're the best friend I've ever made," Zed replied.

That summer, Zed became the lake's favorite swimming instructor. Children learned that sometimes the scariest things are just lonely hearts waiting for someone to say hello. And Lily discovered that the best adventures come from looking past appearances—and that even zombies love swimming on a perfect orange evening.
