The Zombie Who Couldn't Swim
Emma loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd race to the beach, her orange swimsuit glowing like sunshine against the blue waves.
One cloudy afternoon, while practicing her backstroke, Emma spotted something strange. A greenish figure shambled along the shoreline, its arms stretched awkwardly ahead. It was a zombie! But instead of looking scary, it looked… sad.
"Hey!" Emma called, swimming closer. "What's wrong?"
The zombie stopped and made a soft groaning sound, pointing a clumsy finger at the sparkling ocean. Then it held up a tattered, handwritten sign: *I WISH I COULD SWIM.*
Emma's eyes widened. Zombies were supposed to be scary monsters who chased people, not creatures who wanted to swim! But this zombie just looked lonely.
"I can teach you!" Emma offered, swimming to shore. The zombie's gray face lit up (or at least Emma thought it did).
She named him Zed, and every day that week, they met at the beach. Zed was slow and stiff, but he tried so hard. Emma showed him how to float like a starfish, kick like a frog, and blow bubbles. Zed practiced until the sun set, his zombie groans turning into happy splashes.
On the last day of summer, Emma brought her favorite snack: a big, juicy orange from her grandmother's tree.
"For luck," she said, handing it to Zed.
Zed took the orange and studied it carefully. Then he did something amazing – he tossed it into the ocean and jumped in after it. To Emma's delight, Zed didn't sink! He floated, kicked, and even doggy-paddled after his orange, staying above water for the first time ever.
"You're doing it!" Emma cheered, swimming beside him.
That evening, as Zed shambled home with his orange, he turned back and waved – a proper wave, not a zombie reach. Emma waved back, understanding something important: sometimes the things that seem different or scary just need a friend to believe in them.
And every summer after that, Emma and Zed went swimming together, sharing oranges and making the most magical memories under the sun.
