The Zombie Who Couldn't Scare
Lily's cat Mittens was the bravest cat in the world. She wasn't afraid of thunderstorms or vacuum cleaners or even the neighbor's giant dog. But one Tuesday afternoon, Mittens discovered something that made her fur stand up like a bottle brush.
Behind the old oak tree in Lily's backyard sat a mysterious purple pyramid. It sparkled in the sunlight and hummed a soft tune, like a lullaby whispered by the wind. Mittens approached cautiously, her tail twitching.
Suddenly, the pyramid popped open with a gentle *whoosh*, and out tumbled a little green zombie. He had stitched-up patches on his arms, one button eye, and the goofiest grin Lily had ever seen.
"Ummm... brains?" he whispered, looking nervous. "I mean, hello!"
Mittens hissed and puffed up to twice her size. But the zombie didn't attack. Instead, he carefully reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, shiny object—a cat toy shaped like a fish.
"I brought a present," the zombie said shyly. "My name is Zed. I come from the Land of Misunderstood Monsters. We're not scary at all. We just want friends."
Lily, who had been watching from her window, couldn't believe her eyes. She ran outside and found Mittens sniffing Zed's hand while the zombie gently petted her head.
"You're not like the zombies in my comic books," Lily said, amazed.
Zed shrugged. "Those stories give us a bad name. Most zombies love gardening and knitting and making friends with cats. We're actually quite peaceful."
For the rest of the afternoon, Lily, Mittens, and Zed played the most wonderful games. They had tea parties with dandelion tea, built fairy houses in the garden, and Zed told stories about his magical pyramid that traveled between worlds helping lonely monsters find friends.
When the sun began to set, Zed climbed back into his purple pyramid.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked, hugging her new friend.
"The pyramid knows who needs a friend," Zed winked. "Be kind to everyone, even those who look different. You never know who might become your best friend."
And with a sparkly flash, the pyramid vanished. But Mittens still had her new fish toy, and Lily had learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking creatures have the biggest hearts.
