The Zombie Who Could Read Palms

palmbearzombie

Maya dragged her feet into Jordan's Halloween party, feeling like a total **zombie** after three consecutive nights of studying for AP Euro. The zombie makeup she'd slapped on at 11 PM wasn't helping — she really *was* one at this point. Dead inside. Her entire social battery had been drained by school, extracurriculars, and the constant pressure to have everything figured out at sixteen.

The party was already packed. Someone had pushed all the furniture against the walls to create a dance floor, but Maya beelined for the backyard, where it was quieter. Under the swaying **palm** trees (Jordan's dad went all out on the landscaping), she found a girl dressed as a fortune teller sitting at a card table with a crystal ball and a sign: PALM READING - $2 OR YOUR BEST EMBARRASSING STORY.

"You look like you've seen better nights," the girl said. "I'm Chen. Want me to read your palm?"

Maya almost said no. She'd learned to **bear** her burdens alone — that's what being a teenager meant, right? Suffering silently and pretending everything was fine on Instagram. But something about Chen's genuine smile made her sit down.

Chen traced the lines on Maya's hand, her expression growing serious. "You know what? You're going to stop feeling like a zombie soon. This life line? It's just getting started. And this heart line..." She looked up. "You're going to fall in love with something you create. Not someone. Something."

Maya laughed, surprised by how accurate it was. She'd been writing fanfiction in secret for years, too scared to share it with anyone. What if it was cringe? What if people laughed?

"Your turn," Chen said. "Embarrassing story, or two bucks."

Maya hesitated, then spilled everything: the fanfiction, the fear of being judged, the way she felt invisible at school. Chen just nodded and said, "Bet your writing is fire. You should share it."

Three months later, Maya posted her first original story online. The morning it hit 10,000 reads, she sat under those same palm trees in Jordan's backyard, writing her next chapter. The zombie who couldn't **bear** to share her voice had finally found it — all because a stranger at a Halloween party looked at her hand and saw a writer.
