The Zombie Under the Palm Tree
Lily loved spending her summer days at the beach, collecting seashells and building sandcastles. But her favorite spot was under the old palm tree near the dunes, where the leaves whispered secrets in the wind.
One afternoon, Lily noticed something strange. A greenish hand was reaching out from under the palm tree! She gasped and stepped back.
"Hello?" she called out bravely.
Slowly, a boy emerged from the shadows. His skin was pale green, his clothes were tattered, and he walked a bit stiffly.
"I'm a zombie," he said sadly. "But don't worry. I'm not scary. I'm just... lonely."
Lily smiled. "I'm Lily. Want to play?"
The zombie's eyes lit up. "You're not afraid?"
"Nope," said Lily, digging through her beach bag. "Want to play catch?"
She pulled out her baseball. "I love baseball! Do you know how to play?"
The zombie shook his head. "I've never played anything before. Everyone runs away when they see me."
"That's because they don't know you," said Lily gently. "Here, I'll teach you."
Under the palm tree, Lily taught the zombie—whose name was Zeb—how to throw and catch the baseball. At first, Zeb was clumsy. But soon, he was laughing and running and making amazing catches!
"You're really good!" Lily cheered.
Other children gathered around, curious. At first, they were scared. But when they saw Zeb laughing and playing baseball, they joined in too.
By sunset, Zeb had more friends than he'd ever had in his whole zombie life.
"Thank you, Lily," Zeb said, clutching his new baseball. "You taught me something important."
"What's that?" asked Lily.
"That even a zombie can be a baseball star if someone gives him a chance."
Lily hugged her new friend. Under the swaying palm tree, they made a promise to play baseball together every day.
Sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most wonderful—especially when you have the courage to say hello.
