The Zombie Spy Club
Leo pressed his face against the fence, peeking into the creepy house next door. His best friend Maya held her brother's old iPhone like a treasure. 'We're the best spies in the whole world,' she whispered. 'Tonight, we solve the mystery.' The new neighbor moved like a robot—stiff arms, slow steps. Everyone called him the zombie, but Leo wondered if they were wrong.
'Let's spy,' Maya said, activating the iPhone flashlight. They tiptoed across the grass, hearts pounding like drumbeats. The moon painted silver stripes on the sidewalk. Suddenly, the zombie's gate creaked. A figure shuffled toward them!
Leo grabbed Maya's hand. 'Run!' But the figure waved slowly. 'Wait... please...'
The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was Mr. Abernathy, wearing a giant, fuzzy green coat. 'I'm practicing for the Halloween play,' he said, pulling purple glasses from his pocket. 'I'm the friendly zombie.' He smiled, and his mustache wiggled like a caterpillar.
'You're not scary,' Maya said. 'You're wonderful!'
Mr. Abernathy laughed, a sound like crunching autumn leaves. 'Would you like to see something magical?' He opened his coat, and dozens of glowing butterflies flew out, twinkling like tiny stars.
'You're a real magician!' Leo gasped.
'I'm a zombie magician,' Mr. Abernathy said. 'And I need helpers for my show. The iPhone can play spooky music!' So Leo and Maya became the first members of the Zombie Spy Club, discovering that the scariest things are often the most wonderful of all.
That Halloween, they performed for the whole neighborhood. The zombie wasn't frightening anymore. He was their friend, and sometimes, the best adventures start with being brave enough to say hello.
