The Zombie Sphinx Party
Maya's first high school party felt like walking into a live-action TikTok without a script. The basement hummed with bass-heavy music and smelled like cheap body spray and desperation. She'd spent forty-five minutes picking her outfit—black crop top, ripped jeans, just enough edge to say "I'm chill" but not "I'm trying too hard."
Then she spotted the spinach. A vibrant green wedge lodged between her braces, mocking her in the bathroom mirror's unforgiving fluorescent light. She'd nervously devoured spinach artichoke dip earlier, trying to look casual while talking to Chris—the fox-eyed junior with the crooked smile who'd finally noticed her existed.
"No cap, this is lowkey embarrassing," she muttered, digging at her teeth with her fingernail.
When she emerged, the party had shifted into full cringe mode. Someone had put on a zombie movie marathon, and now half the drunk seniors were shuffling around chanting "braaains" while the other half recorded them for Snapchat.
"Maya! There you are!" Chris appeared, smelling like cedar and confidence. "Wanna play Sphinx?"
"Sphinx?"
"Truth or Dare, but you have to answer in riddles." He grinned, and she noticed the spinach was gone from her teeth but apparently still haunted her vibe. "Your turn."
Maya's heart raced. This was it—the moment she'd been overthinking all week. But as she opened her mouth, someone screamed upstairs.
"BEAR!" someone shouted. "THERE'S A BEAR IN THE HOT TUB!"
Chaos erupted. The zombie roleplayers scattered, phones flew out, and Chris grabbed Maya's hand. They bolted up the stairs, pushing through the panicked crowd, and burst into the backyard.
A black bear cub sat by the hot tub, looking as confused as everyone else. It wasn't attacking—it was just eating leftover chips from a fallen bag.
"Bro," Chris whispered, squeezing Maya's hand. "That's literally the most Florida thing ever."
Their eyes met, and Maya realized something: perfection wasn't the goal. The spinach, the zombies, the bear, the sphinx game—this messiness was exactly what high school was supposed to be. She laughed, and Chris laughed with her, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like she was performing.
"Truth or Dare?" she asked him as animal control arrived.
"Truth."
"Are you actually having fun with me, or just being nice?"
Chris looked at the bear, then back at her. "Both," he said. "But mostly the first one."
Maya smiled. So what if her braces caught spinach again? Real life wasn't filtered anyway.
