The Zombie's Swimming Lesson
Lily loved swimming in the ocean, but today the waves felt too big. She stood at the water's edge, her toes wiggling in the warm sand. Above her, a tall palm tree swayed in the breeze like it was dancing to secret music.
Suddenly, something shuffled toward her from behind the palm tree. Lily gasped. It was green and bumpy, with messy seaweed hair and one eye slightly closed. It looked like… a zombie!
But instead of scary, this zombie looked scared. It clutched a colorful floatie shaped like a flamingo.
"H-hello," the zombie said softly. "I'm Zim. I was supposed to learn swimming today, but I'm afraid."
Lily blinked. "You're afraid? But zombies are…"
"Hungry?" Zim finished. "No, that's just stories. I'm actually magical. I help children face their fears. But I'm scared of water. Silly, right?"
Lily giggled. "I'm scared too today."
Zim's one good eye sparkled. "Then maybe we can be scared together?"
Hand in flipper-hand, they waded into the shallow water. Zim showed Lily how to float like a starfish, and Lily showed Zim how to blow bubbles. They laughed so much that fish peeked up to see what was funny.
"Look!" Zim pointed. "I'm doing it! I'm swimming!"
"We both are!" Lily cheered.
They spent the afternoon playing - racing crabs, finding shells, and diving through imaginary kingdoms beneath the waves. The scary zombie had become her best friend.
As the sun began to set, Zim's body started to shimmer like a pearl.
"It's time for me to go," Zim said. "Thank you, Lily. Today I learned two things: how to swim, and that being brave is easier with a friend."
Lily waved as Zim faded into sparkles that swirled up to join the stars.
That night, as Lily fell asleep, she realized the palm tree outside her window looked like it was still dancing, as if it too had learned something magical about friendship and courage.
