The Zombie's Secret Wish
In the town of Pebblebrook, there lived a zombie named Zed who lived in an old tower by the sea. But Zed wasn't scary at all—he was green and fuzzy, with bright orange eyes that sparkled like stars. Every night, he would lean out his tower window and watch the children playing on the beach below, wishing he could join them.
One day, a brave golden dog named Barnaby noticed Zed watching from above. Barnaby was the friendliest dog in Pebblebrook, and he always saw the best in everyone. While other dogs barked at the tower, Barnaby wagged his tail and barked a happy hello.
Zed was so surprised that he accidentally dropped his favorite telescope! It tumbled down, down, down until it landed on the thick steel cable that stretched from the mainland to Pebblebrook Island. The cable was like a giant spider's web, carrying people back and forth in the cable car.
"Oh no!" cried Zed. "My telescope!"
Barnaby saw everything and bounded up the tower stairs, his paws pitter-pattering like raindrops. When he reached the top, he found Zed looking sadly out the window.
"Don't worry!" Barnaby said (and yes, Barnaby could talk—magic things happen in Pebblebrook). "I'll help you get it back!"
Together, the dog and the zombie climbed aboard the cable car. As they rode across the sparkling blue water, Zed told Barnaby his secret: "I'm not really a zombie. I'm a magical creature who was cursed to look like one. I just want to make friends."
Barnaby smiled. "Everyone in Pebblebrook will love you once they know the real you!"
When they returned, the whole town was waiting on the beach. They had seen the zombie and the dog riding together, and instead of running away, they started waving and cheering. That night, Zed joined the beach bonfire for the first time, roasting marshmallows and telling stories about his tower.
And Barnaby? He became known as the dog who saw past appearances and found the best friend in the most unexpected place. Sometimes the scariest-looking things are just lonely hearts waiting for someone to say hello.
