The Zombie's Secret Vitamin

Lily discovered the secret garden on a Tuesday, exactly when she needed magic most. Behind the old oak tree in her backyard, a golden gate appeared — one that had never been there before.

Inside, trees grew the most extraordinary fruit. Each apple and pear glowed with rainbow light. A small wooden sign read: Sunshine Vitamins for Tired Souls.

"Vitamins?" Lily whispered. "Like the ones my mom wants me to eat?"

She reached for a shimmering orange one when she heard it — a slow shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.

From behind the blueberry bush emerged a green creature. Its skin was patchy like moss, its eyes drooped sleepily, and it moved at the speed of a snail. A zombie!

Lily's heart raced. But the zombie didn't moan or chase her. It simply sighed.

"So... tired..." it mumbled.

Lily noticed something strange. The zombie held a withered plant in its hands, trying to care for it, but its fingers moved too slowly. The plant was dying.

"Are you... hungry?" Lily asked, staying back.

"Need... magic..." the zombie said sadly. "Garden... dying..."

The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was the gardener, and it was too exhausted to help anything grow.

Lily made a choice. She picked the glowing orange vitamin and held it out. "Maybe this will help."

The zombie's eyes widened. Slowly, slowly, it reached out and took the vitamin. CRUNCH!

Color exploded through its body. The patchy green skin became smooth emerald. The droopy eyes popped open bright and alert. The zombie stood tall.

"I'm Zara!" the creature exclaimed, spinning joyfully. "Guardian of the Magic Garden! I haven't had sunshine vitamins in forever!"

Zara zoomed around the garden, tending to plants with magical speed. Flowers bloomed instantly. Trees grew new glowing fruits.

"Thank you, friend!" Zara hugged Lily. "Everyone thought I was a scary zombie. I was just a tired guardian who forgot her vitamins!"

Lily learned something that day: Sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need a little help. And true friends see past appearances to the heart beneath.
