The Zombie's Secret Swimming Hole
Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. Every Saturday, she'd pack her swimsuit and follow the babbling creek until she found new pools to splash in. But one rainy afternoon, the creek led her somewhere she'd never been before.
Through the mist, she saw a figure standing by a hidden pond. It shuffled slowly, arms stretched out, making a soft groaning sound. Lily gasped—it looked just like the zombies from her storybooks!
Her heart beat fast as the figure turned toward her. But instead of scary red eyes, the zombie had the kindest brown eyes she'd ever seen. It waved a greenish hand and smiled.
"Hello!" Lily called out, her voice trembling just a little. "Are you... a zombie?"
The creature nodded slowly. "I am," it said in a voice like rusty leaves. "But I'm not scary. I'm just... lonely. And I love swimming."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You swim?"
"Every day!" The zombie's face lit up. "The magic water keeps me from falling apart. Want to see?"
Before she could answer, the zombie did a perfect cannonball into the pond. SPLASH! Green droplets flew everywhere like emeralds. When it surfaced, the zombie looked completely different—its skin was rosy, its hair flowed like dark seaweed, and it moved gracefully through the water.
"Come swim with me!" the zombie called. "The water's magic!"
Lily couldn't resist. She jumped in, and the water felt like warm honey. She and the zombie swam for hours, playing tag and racing to the other side. The zombie, whose name was Z, told her about being cursed by a grumpy wizard 100 years ago, and how swimming in the magic pond was the only thing that made him feel normal again.
As the sun began to set, Z climbed out and slowly turned green and stiff again. "Thank you for swimming with me," he said sadly. "Everyone else runs away."
Lily squeezed his hand. "They don't know what they're missing. You're the best swimming friend ever!"
Every weekend after that, Lily returned to swim with Z. She even brought her other friends, who learned that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures make the kindest friends. And Z? He learned that he didn't have to be lonely anymore—not when he had friends who saw him with their hearts instead of their fears.
