The Zombie's Secret Pool
Lily was running through the meadow, her bare feet padding against the soft grass. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of purple and gold. She had discovered something magical and couldn't wait to tell her best friend, Maya.
"Maya! You won't believe what I found!" Lily called, waving her arms excitedly.
Maya appeared from behind a large oak tree, her curious eyes bright. Together, the two girls ran toward the woods behind Lily's house. There, hidden among ancient trees, was a pool so clear it looked like liquid silver.
"It's beautiful," Maya breathed.
But suddenly, something stirred in the bushes. A figure emerged, moving slowly and stiffly. Its skin was pale green, and its arms hung loosely at its sides.
"A zombie!" Maya gasped, grabbing Lily's hand. "We need to run!"
But Lily didn't move. She looked closer and noticed the creature's kind, sleepy eyes. He wasn't scary at all—he was just very, very slow.
"Wait," Lily said gently. "I don't think he wants to hurt us."
The zombie stopped and smiled a crooked but warm smile. He pointed one long finger at the pool, then made a swimming motion with his arms.
"He wants us to swim?" Maya asked, surprised.
The zombie nodded enthusiastically, though it took him a long time to do it. That's when the girls noticed something else—trailing behind him were three baby turtles, moving at the same careful pace. He wasn't a monster at all. He was a guardian, protecting the little creatures as they made their slow journey to the water.
"He's not scary," Lily realized aloud. "He's just gentle."
That summer, the girls visited the magical pool every day. They named their new friend Zed, and though he never spoke, he taught them something important: sometimes the things that seem strange or different at first turn out to be the most wonderful friends of all.
And Zed? He finally got his baby turtles safely to the water, where they swam happily under the moonlight. The pool wasn't just magical because of its sparkling waters anymore—it was magical because it brought together three unlikely friends who learned that kindness comes in all shapes and speeds.
