The Zombie's Secret Heart
Lily was playing in her backyard when she noticed something strange near the old oak tree. A small dog with shaggy brown hair was barking at a pile of leaves. Curious, Lily crept closer.
From beneath the leaves emerged not a monster, but a tiny zombie - no taller than her knee! He had green skin and mismatched buttons for eyes, but instead of being scary, he looked lonely. His name was Zed, and he explained he wasn't a real zombie. He was a magical toy who had lost his way during a game of hide-and-seek with his best friend, a little girl who had moved away.
"I've been trying to find someone to play with," Zed said sadly. "Everyone runs away when they see me."
Lily's dog, Buster, stopped barking and wagged his tail. Animals could see the truth - Zed had a kind heart. Lily realized something important: you can't judge someone by how they look.
"I'll be your friend!" Lily declared. "And Buster too!"
Zed's eyes twinkled. "I have a secret power. I'm actually a spy for the Magic Toy Kingdom. I collect stories of friendship to bring back to all the lonely toys."
Together, they spent the afternoon playing by the stream. Zed showed them how to skip magical stones across the water, and the water sparkled like diamonds with each splash. Buster chased the stones, barking joyfully.
As the sun began to set, Zed pressed something into Lily's hand - a tiny golden button that had been his spare eye. "Keep this, and remember: true friends see with their hearts, not just their eyes."
In a flash of rainbow light, Zed disappeared, off on his next spy mission. But Lily knew she would never forget the zombie who taught her that the best friends come in the most unexpected packages.
That night, as Lily drifted to sleep with the golden button safely in her pocket, she heard faraway laughter - the sound of toys finding their forever friends, all thanks to one lonely zombie's brave heart.
