The Zombie's Secret Friend
Lily found the shiny iPhone buried beneath ancient oak roots, its screen still glowing with starlight. Her cat, Whiskers, purred suspiciously as vines curled around the device.
"Hello?" a voice crackled from the phone. "I've been waiting 100 years for a friend."
Suddenly, leaves rustled. A figure emerged—green and patchy, with wild purple hair like cotton candy. A zombie! But instead of scary red eyes, his eyes twinkled like fireflies.
"I'm Zombear," he said shyly. "But everyone runs away before I can explain."
Whiskers approached bravely. The zombie's patchwork hand reached out slowly. The cat rubbed against his mossy knee, purring louder than a thunderstorm.
"See?" Lily smiled. "Whiskers knows you're kind."
Zombear's hair sparkled with fairy dust. "I'm the forest guardian. The 'zombie' curse makes me look scary, but I only protect lost children."
He showed them his home—a treehouse filled with toys from children who'd visited over centuries. The iPhone had belonged to a girl lost in 1924. Zombear had kept it safe, hoping someone would find it and return it.
"But I was lonely," he admitted. "Guardians need friends too."
Lily's heart swelled. Sometimes the scariest things are just the most misunderstood.
"We'll be your friends," she promised.
Every day after school, Lily and Whiskers visited Zombear. He told stories of magical creatures, taught them forest songs, and even helped Lily with her homework. The other kids eventually met him too—after they saw him rescue a puppy from a storm.
Now Zombear wasn't lonely anymore. His purple hair bounced when he laughed, which was all the time. And the iPhone? It still glowed with starlight, a reminder that the best friends sometimes come in the most unexpected packages.
Lily learned that day: never judge someone by how they look. Even zombies—real or not—deserve kindness, friendship, and a chance to share their story.
